June 1 Information for Families of Students Returning to School

May 29, 2020

Hello Airport Families,

As you know, the Ministry of Education announced a “restart plan” for students returning to school for face to face instruction. Students in grades K-5 would receive 2 days a week of instruction while students in grades 6-12 would receive one day a week of instruction.

What will this look like?

  • Students in grades K-5 who have notified the school that they are returning for face to face instruction have been divided into 2 groups – group A and group B (group A will attend on Monday and Tuesday, Group B will attend on Thursday and Friday and home support/connection will happen on Wednesday).

  • Students in grades 6 and 7 will be invited back to school for 1 day of face to face instruction a week
  • All essential workers and vulnerable students are entitled to 5 days a week of instruction.
  • If you would like to send your child to school and have not notified the school, it is important to let us

know by contacting the office. Because of the demands related to a change in instructional delivery, it will likely take 3-4 for us to prepare for your child as planning needs to occur to ensure all Health and Safety protocols are met.

Daily Health Check

You must complete a daily health check with your child prior to sending them to school. If your child answers “yes” to any of the following questions, they will not be permitted in the building:

  • Have you been sick in the last 24 hours?

  • Do you have a fever?

  • Do you have a runny nose?

  • Do you have a cough or are you sneezing?

Hand washing

Students will be required to wash their hands:

  • When they arrive at the school and before they go home.

  • After sneezing or coughing into hands or using a tissue

  • Before eating or drinking.

  • After using the restrooms.

  • After playing outside.

  • Whenever hands are visibly dirty.

  • Before and after any transitions within the school setting (e.g. to another classroom, indoor-outdoor transitions)

Drinking Water

  • Please send your child to school with a water bottle.

  • Students will not be permitted to drink from the fountains although they will be able to use the water bottle dispenser on the water fountains.

  • Students will use the restroom closest to their classroom and only one student will be allowed access to a restroom at a time.

Visitors to the school

  • Access to the school by non-district personnel, including parents, is by appointment only. The principal must approve all visits.

Daytime custodian

  • There will be a custodian work while classes are in session. He will be disinfecting classrooms when students are not in them (outside for PE, recess, etc.). He will also be disinfecting the restrooms multiple times throughout the day.

Student transportation on buses will resume, however, capacity will be reduced to 50 percent allowing only one child per seat. Only siblings may sit together. First Student, the contracted busing company for the school district will clean and disinfect buses in accordance with the BC Centre for Disease Control protocol. Given the reduced capacity on buses, where feasible, we encourage parents/guardians to transport their child to and from school.

Hours of instruction

8:43-2:30 with a morning recess break and lunch break.

  • In the morning, children should proceed directly to the exterior door of their classroom

to line up prior to their teacher welcoming them into their classroom. Please do not send your child to the school prior to 8:30am as we do not provide supervision prior to that time. In point of fact, the closer to 8:43 your child arrives, the easier it will be for us to maintain physical distancing before the school day starts. The areas for lineups will be marked with indications provided for appropriate social distancing.

  • Recesses will be staggered:
    Divisions 1(k/1) and 2 (1/2): 10:00-10:15
    Divsions 3 (3/4) and 4 (4/5): 10:15-10:30
    Divisions 5 (5/6) and 6 (6/7): 10:30 – 10:45

  • Lunch will be staggered:
Division 1, 2 and 3 will have lunch from 11:40 to 12:25. They will be playing from

    11:40 to 12:05 and eating from 12:05 to 12:25.
Divisions 4, 5 and 6 will have lunch from 11:45 to 12:30. They will be eating from

    11:45 to 12:05 and playing from 12:05 to 12:30.

  • Students will be dismissed from their classroom exterior doors at 2:30.

  • Other than custodial staff, adults may only be in the school from Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm

Please remember, the return to school is optional. Parents and guardians will have the choice of bringing their children back to class on a part-time basis this school year or continuing with the remote and online learning options.

If you have any questions, please contact the office at (250)339-3732.
