Week at a Glance Dec. 3-7, 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Hard to believe we are almost to December with three more weeks until the Xmas break. Busy time with lots to do.

Again, thank you for all your donations for EDAS and Santa's Workshop. Please keep them coming.

We have needed to change the date of Santa's Workshop from Friday Dec. 14th to Monday Dec. 17th. Please get ready to be thoroughly excited with a gift from your child.

Ms. Phye, in the Indigenous Ed. Room is having a Christmas wreath sale in the main foyer on Monday and Tuesday. The wreaths will be $5.00 each and are made by the indigenous students who are fund-raising for a trip to Alert Bay in the Spring. The wreaths are made from pinecone and are really beautiful. There will also be an ice-cream sale the following week.

We are acquiring a really good relationship with the church next door. Two of our grade one classes go over and read to the seniors once a week, we have 11 seniors coming over and reading with children throughout the week, and they do the Bonanza after school craft group twice a month. They have invited our children to a Gingerbread house building contest, all supplies included, on Sat. Dec. 15 from 2:00-3:00 in their gym. I have been asked to be a judge, so please think of bringing your children to this fun event. There is also a "Christmas Tales" performance from 3-5 following, if you wish to stay.

With yesterday's 4.5 earthquake in the Fort St. John area and today's 7.0 in Alaska, it reminds me that it is not if but when we receive a large earthquake. Are you prepared?

Sexual health educator Dr. Claire Vanston will speaking at Vanier on Monday Dec 3 to deliver Part 2 of her parent education series:  Do No Sexual Harm:  Raising Sexually Ethical Teens.

Her presentation that night will be in Vanier Secondary School's multi-purpose room (4830 Headquarters Road in Courtenay) from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.

The presentation is free of charge and open to ALL parents (of both elementary & high school students), guardians, educators, and interested folks in the Comox Valley.

As Dr. Claire will be moving to Ottawa in the summer of 2019, this will be the last chance for SD71 parents to hear her speak – don't miss it!

We have had three parents sign up for the K-2 parent reading information night on Jan 16th. The handouts are great and you will learn fun ways of home reading at night.

Unfortunately, I will need to close the gym before school for the next two weeks, as our school will have the gymnastics equipment set up.

The photo packages from the original photo day will be in next week. We will send them home with the children once they arrive.

Every class had a presentation today by Michael Bortolotto . Please ask your child about the 4 things that we all should do.
