1. Statement of Purpose
At Arden we strive to provide a safe, caring and educationally nurturing environment for all. Our school rules and policies are established for everyone’s protection, safety and well-being. Arden’s Code of Conduct is in addition to School District#71's Policy 6020 and the regulations attached to it. If any conflict exists between the School District Policy and the Arden Elementary School Code of Conduct, District Policy prevails. We note that discretion is available in disciplinary decisions for all students including those with recognized special needs.
The school code of conduct defines appropriate student behaviour at school, while traveling to and from school and while attending school functions at any location.
Students are expected to do their best work and to respect others, their learning environment and personal and school property. They must follow the school and classroom rules and accept responsibility for their own choices and actions. Regular attendance and punctuality is mandated by the School Act and will be enforced by the administration. Students are expected to behave in a safe and pleasant manner and to inform adults in a timely manner of incidents of bullying, harassment and intimidation. The staff, with parent involvement, assists students in developing skills for resolving conflict, problem solving and decision making appropriate to their age
Behaviour that interferes with the learning of others or the orderly environment of the school, injures or threatens others or causes damage to property is deemed inappropriate. The following are examples, not an all-inclusive list, of behaviours that fall into this category:
• Behaviours that interfere with the learning of others, interferes with an orderly environment or create unsafe conditions.
• Acts of bullying (including the subtle varieties), harassment, intimidation or physical violence
• Illegal acts such as possession, use or distribution of illegal or restricted substances, possession or use of a weapon or theft of or damage to property.
- discrimination based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disablities, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression and age.
It is our expectation that as students mature and progress through the grades that they will, in most cases, be capable of greater personal responsibility and self-discipline and therefore it is appropriate to have escalating consequences for inappropriate and repeated unacceptable behaviours.
Consequences for misbehaviour will be applied in a fair and judicious manner and wherever possible the disciplinary action will be preventative and restorative. Depending on the severity or frequency of the behaviour and on the age and maturity level of the student, one or more of the following actions will be taken.
1. Restitution - repair or replacement of objects. Some form of service to the offended party.
2. Loss/limit or delay of access to school areas. Loss/limit or delay of access to school equipment. Loss/limit or delay in participation in activities.
3. Denial of interaction with other students (during recess and/or lunch) - “time out”
4. In-school suspension - to be served in office, another class or alternate safe place designated by the administration.
5. Out of school suspension for a period of less than five days.
6. Out of school suspension for a period exceeding five days. Follow up meeting with a representative of the Superintendant’s office.
The scope or severity of an incident may require us to advise other parties of serious breaches of the code of conduct. For example:
• Parents of the offender(s) and victim(s)
• School district officials, police and other agencies – as required by law or policy.
• Other parents – when deemed to be important to reassure members of the school community that school officials are aware of a serious situation or incident and are taking appropriate actions.
2. Arden Elementary School Expectations
Arrival and Departure
• Enter the building only after 8:15 a.m. In good weather hang up back pack and proceed outside.
• Obey adult crosswalk patrol.
• Walk wheeled transportation on school ground and at crosswalks.
• Go directly home at the end of school dismissal.
• Cellphones, MP3 players, electronics of all kinds are to be put in backpacks upon arriving at school and are not to be used until the end of the school day.
• Do not leave the grounds during school hours without written parent authorization and without signing out at the office.
• No fighting, including play fighting
• Do not throw or carry dangerous objects (sticks, rocks, etc.)
• Do not hang upside down on playground apparatus.
• Do not throw snow.
• A teacher note is required for use of the phone.
Learning and Productivity
Everyone at Arden Elementary…
has the right and responsibility to teach and learn without disruption.
chooses behaviours that are considerate of the learning environment.
attends each class on time, with the proper materials, prepared to work and learn to the best of their ability.
takes pride in putting forth their best effort.
Everyone at Arden Elementary…
recognizes that their personal safety is their own responsibility and takes the appropriate measures to always remain safe.
refrains from using unsafe behaviour (horseplay, running etc.).
raises their voices in emergency situations only.
alerts adults regarding potential safety hazards
signs in at the office when arriving late and signs out at the office if leaving early.
Everyone at Arden Elementary…
uses positive language and behaviours to demonstrate respect for themselves and others. Inappropriate language, intimidating and bullying behaviour are not tolerated
dresses appropriately for the learning environment. Specific expectations for clothing are covered in the Arden Elementary dress code.

accepts responsibility for his or her actions.
takes positive action when someone or something is at risk.
is expected to contribute to the good of the Arden Elementary Community. We all positively represent Arden Elementary as ambassadors for our community.
Individual Classroom Expectations
The teachers at Arden Elementary believe that every student is able to be a successful learner. In order to bring about this success, each teacher develops an appropriate learning climate according to the subject being studied and teaching practices. The teachers' expectations, regulations and evaluation procedures are a crucial part of an appropriate tone at school.
3. The Discipline Process
Consequences of Misbehaviour
In the event that a student is referred to the school administration for a discipline referral a consequence may be likely. Disciplinary action is considered serious, is normally progressive and may include:
• special duties
• parental contact
• impact statements, and meeting with victims and possibly parents of all parties involved
• mentoring, counseling or conflict resolution
• community mentoring, work, or service
• behaviour contracts
• part time attendance
• parent supervision
• in-school suspension
• suspension from school
• suspension to the School Board
• removal from school
Discretion for recognized special needs students is a key part of the discipline process.
In-school suspensions are issued when students fail to respond to other disciplinary measures. Out of school suspensions are issued when more severe consequences are warranted and it becomes necessary to temporarily remove a student from the school.
All suspensions are for serious offenses or continued misbehaviour after repeated warnings. They serve to underline the fact that attendance at school is not automatic and involves obligations and responsibilities. The principal or vice-principal has the authority to suspend for up to five days. The length of suspension depends upon the circumstances that led to the suspension. The school board office issues suspensions longer than five days.
When a student is suspended, he/she is not to be on the school grounds during school hours until the suspension is over. It is the student's responsibility to keep up with all schoolwork, including the submission of assignments. It is his/her responsibility to stay in contact with classmates and/or the school to receive homework. Suspended students cannot participate in any school-sponsored activities during the period of their suspension.
While suspensions are generally not issued for a first offense, they will likely be given for the following actions:
• use of foul or offensive language towards staff or other students in or around the school.
• use of physical violence or verbal threats in or around the school.
• willful disobedience toward a teacher or other staff member in the school (ex. Teacher’s aide, custodian, noon hour supervisor)
• causing of a false fire alarm.
• vandalism or theft of property.
Students, parents, and staff have the right to:
• be treated with respect and dignity
• speak on their own behalf or have an advocate speak for or with them
• be heard
• participate in decisions affecting them
• receive clear, complete and appropriate reasons for a decision
• obtain all information that led to the initial decision or that is being considered in an appeal
• an impartial review of a decision that affects them - a review that is accessible, flexible, timely and easy to use
• an appeal procedure that has a built-in mechanism to protect against retribution
This means that:
• students are informed of the rules and regulations of the school
• school rules and regulations are administered fairly and consistently for the good of all students
• discretion is used in the disciplining of all students, but particularly for recognized special needs students
• discipline issues are discussed with students to ensure they thoroughly understand them
• issues are investigated to determine the truth as closely as possible
• parents are informed of major discipline issues affecting their child and parent opinions are sought regarding appropriate punishments
• as per district policy parent contact is made regarding any out of school suspensions
Students and parents who do not feel a disciplinary decision is appropriate may appeal that decision through the following channels in order:
• the person who made the decision
• the principal or vice principal
• the superintendent of schools or his designate
The school district’s senior management will hear an appeal of a decision that significantly affects the education, health, or safety of the student.
