Indigenous Education

The Indigenous Program here at Brooklyn Elementary is available Monday to Friday during regular school hours and is open to all students of indigenous ancestry; this ancestry can be determined on a voluntary basis through self-identification and includes status, non-status, metis or Inuit ancestry and may extend several generations back in your family history.

The Indigenous Education Program has Indigenous Support Workers in every school in School District 71.  In addition to hosting lunch clubs for all grades, Indigenous Support Worker’s provide academic, cultural, social emotional and student leadership support to students.  Indigenous Support Workers are also available to support educators within the school by arranging cultural presentations, accessing Indigenous cultural resources both in community and through school district channels. This service is provided to enhance Brooklyn’s current school programs and if there is anything we can do to support your child please feel free to contact us.

The Indigenous Support Worker at Brooklyn is Cheryl Graham. Cheryl moved with her family from Tofino in December of 2018 and is excited to call the Comox Valley home. Cheryl previously worked as an Education Assistant and Youth Worker with in both School District 70 and 43 (for 20 years).  She has also worked as a Youth Worker and Early Childhood Educator in community and recreational settings.
