SD71 Welcomes Students Back to School
August 28, 2017
Summer is passing by quickly and students will soon be returning back to school. We welcome all new students to our District and also welcome back all of our returning students.
2017/18 School Year
We at SD71 are excited about the 2017/18 school year. School starts September 5, 2017. The first day is a half day where elementary students will start at the regular time and end early (please check your school web site for up-to-date information).
There are changes to our daily schedules for this school year. A reminder to parents that we are not running an alternate schedule on Friday's this year and therefore students will attend full day each Friday with the exception of Hornby Island Elementary.
For more information about the school year, the 2017/18 school year calendar is available on the SD71 website.
New Classrooms and More Teachers
The summer has been a busy time preparing our schools for another successful school year. In response to the class size and classroom composition agreement between government and the BCTF last spring and factoring in enrollment growth, SD71 will have approximately 40 additional classroom spaces in schools across the district. To staff these new spaces, we have also hired over 50 new teachers. As part of this agreement we see the return of Teacher Librarians in all of our schools.
Work continues to ensure we have adequate classroom space. Over the next few months some schools will receive new modular classrooms. While we await delivery of these modular classrooms, there may be some temporary classroom spaces established in your neighborhood school.
If families are new to the Comox Valley and have not registered their children for school student registration is now open. All registration is taking place at the School Board Office at 607 Cumberland Road in Courtenay. Office summer hours are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Registration requirements are listed on the SD71 website. Our schools are very full and as such new students will be placed in a school based on space availability at their grade level.
For bus transportation, new riders that have not yet applied for a bus pass should do so as soon as possible. Information about registering for a bus pass and new bus route information are posted on the SD71 website.
G. P. Vanier Seismic Upgrade and Modernization
The seismic upgrade and modernization at G.P. Vanier Secondary School continues to progress with significant work being completed over the summer including the new science area. We have about one more year of work at the school until the modernization is completed.
