Message from Cumberland Community School Administration

June 30, 2020

To: Cumberland Community School Community,

As the 2019/20 school year draws to a close, we finally find ourselves in a position where we can reflect on the years' happenings.   What a year it was!  2019/20 saw CCS officially eclipse the 550 student mark.  We hosted a series of public consultations in order to give our community a voice in how they would like to see our school continue to grow, and our community certainly responded!  We also worked hard to implement our co-created school goals around environmental sustainability, improving our students' literacy skills, and taking real steps towards reconciliation.  Then COVID-19 hit in late March, and in the space of a few days, the world was turned on its head.

We would like to take this opportunity to issue a heart-felt thank-you to all of our staff, both teachers and support staff, for the tremendous work that went into switching the delivery of their curriculums not once, but twice during the same school year, and for the care that they consistently demonstrated for their students' educational and social well-being.  We would like to issue a second heart-felt thank-you to our parent community, who had to display tremendous resilience and flexibility in order to handle the unexpected increase in responsibility associated with the reality of delivering a home-based education.

As we look toward 2020/21, we are hopeful that we can welcome all of our families back to our school in September in a safe manner.  While we head into summer feeling this sense of hopefulness and optimism, the reality is that the future regarding COVID-19 is uncertain.  At this time, we are unsure what school will look like come September, and if/how it will change as we head into fall and winter. But thanks to sound planning, a flexible staff, and a supportive community, we feel we are ready for a wide range of possibilities.  We hope that our families/community also take some time this summer to prepare for the range of possibilities that the 2020/21 school year may hold, particularly in terms of what they may need in the unfortunate case that COVID-19 forces us to once again learn from home.

We thank everybody who makes this school an amazing place to learn, and we hope that you have a fun, relaxing, and safe summer reconnecting with those who matter most.

We hope to see you in September!
